Protein needs are general estimates based on ICMR-NIN recommendations. People with kidney disease or other medical conditions should follow their doctor’s advice. Food protein values are approximate. Medical disclaimer
According to ICMR-NIN (2020), healthy Indian adults need about 0.83 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight each day. A 55 kg woman needs roughly 46 grams. Needs rise in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Dal, curd, paneer, eggs, sprouts, fish and chicken are all good sources.
Your baseline is your weight multiplied by 0.83 g, the ICMR-NIN recommended dietary allowance for adults.
During pregnancy, ICMR-NIN adds about 9.5 g a day in the second trimester and 22 g in the third.
While breastfeeding, it adds about 16.9 g a day for the first six months and 13.2 g for months six to twelve.
Yes. Combining foods such as dal with rice or roti, and adding curd, paneer, milk, sprouts, soya, nuts and seeds through the day helps vegetarians meet their protein needs. Spreading protein across meals is easier than trying to eat it all at once.
Most people can meet their needs from regular food. Protein supplements may suit some people, but check with a dietitian or doctor first — especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or have kidney concerns.
People who exercise regularly, especially with strength training, may benefit from a little more than the baseline. A dietitian can personalise your target based on your activity and goals.
