BMI is a general screening measure and does not diagnose any condition. It is not suitable for pregnant women, children or teenagers. Speak with a healthcare professional about your individual health. Medical disclaimer
For Asian and Indian adults, a BMI of 18.5 to 22.9 is generally considered the healthy range. A BMI of 23 to 24.9 is classed as overweight and 25 or above as obese. These cut-offs are lower than the international ones because Asian populations tend to face metabolic health risks at lower body weights.
BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by the square of your height in metres (kg/m²).
We use the cut-offs recommended for Asian populations, which are lower than the global WHO ranges.
Your healthy weight range is the weight that gives a BMI of 18.5 to 22.9 at your height.
Research shows that many Asian people, including Indians, tend to carry more body fat and face a higher risk of conditions such as type 2 diabetes at a lower BMI. That is why Indian guidelines use 23 (not 25) as the start of the overweight range.
BMI is a quick screening tool, not a diagnosis. It does not measure body fat directly and does not account for muscle, bone, age or body shape. It is not suitable during pregnancy or for children and teenagers. A dietitian can look at your overall health, habits and goals.
No. BMI is not a useful measure during pregnancy. Use our pregnancy weight gain calculator with your pre-pregnancy weight instead, and follow your obstetrician’s guidance.
