These ranges are general guidance for single pregnancies and are not medical advice. Every pregnancy is different — follow the recommendations of your obstetrician and qualified healthcare professionals. Medical disclaimer
It depends on your weight before pregnancy. Institute of Medicine guidance for a single baby suggests 11.5–16 kg for women who started at a healthy BMI, 12.5–18 kg if underweight, 7–11.5 kg if overweight and 5–9 kg if obese. Most gain is in the second and third trimesters. Your obstetrician will guide what is right for you.
We calculate your BMI from your weight and height before pregnancy.
Your total recommended range comes from Institute of Medicine (2009) guidance for single pregnancies.
Your range for this week assumes about 0.5–2 kg in the first trimester, then a steady rise to the full range by 40 weeks.
Dieting is not recommended during pregnancy. If you are concerned about your weight gain, talk to your obstetrician. A dietitian can help you focus on balanced, nourishing meals rather than restriction.
Yes. Women expecting twins are usually advised to gain more. This calculator is for single pregnancies — please follow your obstetrician’s guidance for twins.
Some Indian clinicians use lower, Asian-specific BMI cut-offs. The ranges here follow the widely used Institute of Medicine guidance. Your obstetrician may give you a range that is more specific to you.
