A simple rule is to keep your waist measurement to less than half your height — a waist-to-height ratio below 0.5. For Indian women, a waist of 80 cm or more is also considered a marker of increased metabolic risk, even at a normal BMI. Waist size matters because fat around the tummy is linked to insulin resistance.
Waist-to-height ratio is your waist divided by your height. Below 0.5 is generally considered healthy.
Waist-to-hip ratio is your waist divided by your hips. WHO guidance flags 0.85 or more for women and 0.90 or more for men.
We also compare your waist with South Asian cut-offs: 80 cm for women and 90 cm for men.
Stand relaxed and breathe out gently. Measure midway between the bottom of your lowest rib and the top of your hip bone — usually around the belly button — keeping the tape snug but not tight. Measure hips at the widest part of your buttocks.
Many women with PCOS have some insulin resistance, which is linked to fat stored around the abdomen. Tracking your waist over time can be a helpful, non-scale way to see progress as you build healthier habits.
